READY:
“So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the words of Christ.”
Romans 10:17
SET:
Listen. Pause.
Take in the sound of the surroundings you’re in at this very minute.
What are the sounds you hear?
What is your ear now tuning in to hear?
Who do you hear?
Are there sounds you weren’t aware of before stopping to listen?
It’s remarkable how when we truly tune in to listen how much more we hear.
In our fast-paced society and noisy world, do you take moments to slow down and hear from the Lord?
God had given us an incredible gift through His Word for that very opportunity to hear from Him.
Here are four practical steps we can take today to grow in hearing from the Lord as we run in this race of life:
- Remove other voices and distractions.
Putting your phone in another room can potentially be the best move to make as you spend time in the Bible.
Do not fear what you may miss on your phone.
Rather, think about what you may miss if you’re distracted by your phone as you read the Bible!
Putting aside other voices and sounds as you dive into God’s Word can help you more clearly hear what He is speaking to you today. - Pause and pray.
Asking for the Holy Spirit to lead you and teach you in His Word is key to hearing from Him.
Pause, pray, then listen. - Keep your heart and your Bible continually open!
As the pages of your Bible are left open on the table, desk and any other place, look in and read His Word not only at the start of the day but throughout the entire day.
Open your heart to Jesus to hear from Him. - Respond.
As you hear, respond in faith to what He shows you in His Word.
Is He leading you to forgive someone today?
Is He speaking to you about loving a difficult person or praying for someone?
Is He calling you to repent and be set free from a certain sin pattern?
Faith has feet.
Take action as He guides you in the Word and speaks to your heart.
You are responsible for the obedience, and God is responsible for the results!
Entrust the results into His hands as you listen and follow His leading in the Word.
Sometimes as runners, it is counterintuitive to slow down our pace for personal athletic gain.
However, studies have shown that training at a Zone 2 level, around 60-70% of your maximum heart rate and a lower effort level, can lead to improved cardiovascular fitness and athletic performance.
I challenge everyone reading this to make time to pause, slow down, and listen to the Lord in His Word.
Try a “Zone 2” workout in God’s Word!
It’s amazing how He can speak to us as we turn to Him and turn the pages in our Bibles.
“Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!”
Psalm 46:10
GO:
- On a scale of 1-10, with 1 being the worst and 10 being the best, how good of a listener are you?
- What are the loudest voices in your life? What are the loudest thoughts in your life? Does these voices and thoughts align with the Bible?
- How can you remove a distraction from your life to better hear the Lord?
- What is your pace as you read the Bible? Do you race through it or do you go at a slower pace?
