Reflecting His Freedom: The Scent of His Joy

Ready:

“But thanks be to God, who in Christ always leads us in triumphal procession, and through us spreads the fragrance of the knowledge of Him everywhere. For we are the aroma of Christ to God among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing.”

2 Corinthians 2:14–15

SET:
As runners, we all understand the odor that we—or our shoes—can give off after hard runs and workouts.
But have you ever wondered what your spiritual scent is to those around you?

The fragrance we receive when we give our lives to Christ isn’t just a cover-up deodorant masking our old odor.
It’s a complete transformation—a change from the inside out that fills our lives with the sweet aroma of the Spirit.
Paul describes this aroma beautifully:

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control; against such things there is no law.” (Galatians 5:22–23)

One of my favorite smells is that of a freshly cut watermelon.
Some might say it has no scent, but I challenge you—cut one open and breathe in that fresh, crisp sweetness!
Likewise, the scent of the Spirit’s fruit—especially joy—should be tangible in our lives and to everyone around us.

Paul reminds us in Galatians 5:1,

“For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm, therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.”

Galatians 5:1

But what exactly has Jesus set us free from?

Matthew 1:21 gives us the answer:

“She will bear a son, and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.”

Matthew 1:21

Sin is slavery.
It binds us, drains us, and deceives us with false promises of joy.
It’s like turning down a path marked “Shortcut to Joy,” only to discover it leads to emptiness and destruction.

But Jesus stepped in front of that lying sign and pointed us back to truth:

“I am the way, the truth, and the life.”

John 14:6

He not only redirected us—He took our sin upon Himself.
The heavy, foul scent of sin was laid on Him so that we could carry the victorious fragrance of Christ through His resurrection.

So how do you “smell” today?
Are you carrying the stench of unconfessed sin that pushes others away from God?
Or are you running to the Living Water daily, letting Him wash and renew you?

When we receive His freedom by faith—understanding His everlasting love, the victory of the cross, and the steadiness of His promises—we begin to reflect that freedom.
And when we live in that freedom, joy overflows. It becomes a sweet, undeniable fragrance to all who encounter us.

“For you shall go out in joy and be led forth in peace.”

Isaiah 55:12

GO:
– Think back to a time when you—or your shoes—were the smelliest they’ve ever been. What caused it, and how did you clean up?
– As a Christ follower, what temptations or patterns might be dulling your spiritual scent today?
– How much joy are you carrying in your life right now? Ask God to reveal what’s stealing your joy and to fill you with His freedom and fragrance again.
