Verse Of The Week : 6 May 2024

May 6, 2024

He drew me up from the pit of destruction, out of the miry bog and set my feet on a rock, making my steps secure. He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God.

Psalm 40:1-3

“Miry Bog 5K: Get Ready for the Race of your Life!”
Could you imagine seeing this as a flyer for the next 5K race in your community?
Would you sign up?
We know today that some people enjoy the challenge of racing in a mud run, but we know that we would never choose the muddy, miry bog to run our one race of life on.
However, there are many people who are there right now: racing in the “Miry Bog Ultramarathon” feeling stuck, slow, and perhaps defeated, ready to quit, seeking some solid ground to run on.

As David was in this situation, he knew there was only One who could truly rescue him.
In the first line of Psalm 40, David shared about how he waited patiently for the Lord, not a person, not for his situation to change, not for him to muster up the willpower to keep trudging along.
He knew that the Lord alone was the One who could save him. He knew the Source of rescue.

God draws near to those who draw near to Him (James 4:8).
He wants us to cry out to Him for deliverance and to look to Him.
The Lord was the One who saw him, saved him, and pulled him out to go where his every step could be secure.
On top of this incredible rescue, the Lord placed a song of praise in David’s mouth.
Could you imagine running in a miry bog, being pulled out, and then experiencing the smooth, freshly paved path for you to run on?
How would you respond?

Jesus shared about our words being the overflow of our hearts.

“What comes out of the mouth proceeds from the heart.”

Matthew 15:18

“Out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.”

Luke 6:45

God transforms hearts and with that new heart comes new affections, desires, and words.
You get a new song: a song of praise to God.

“And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.”

Ezekiel 36:26

If you’re feeling bogged down today, perhaps in the Miry Bog 5K, 10K, marathon, or ultramarathon, I invite you to look to Jesus.
Wait for Him.
Cry out to Him.
Seek Him to set your feet on solid ground.
Let Him pull you out, place you on a new path, and give you a new heart.
Have faith in Jesus as your ultimate Source of rescue for the big things in life, like your salvation, along with the details of your life.
Get ready to overflow with songs of praise!
May your life be a powerful testimony of the goodness of God through your songs of praise.

  1. What does it look like practically to live with a “new heart”?
  2. How would you describe the path that you are on in this season? Are you in a miry bog? Or do you feel like you’re on solid ground?
  3. What is one way that you can incorporate songs of praise into your day or your next workout?
