Serve Through Love

READY:

“For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another.”

Galatians 5:13

SET:

As we approach remembering the crucifixion of Jesus on Good Friday and celebrating the Resurrection of Jesus on Easter Sunday, think of the cross.
The cross that Jesus was crucified on is the proof of the freedom that was bought for us at an insurmountable price, paid in full and done completely in love.
Jesus hung on the cross, one of the most “unfree” circumstances to be in: nailed to a tree.
Yet three days later, Jesus rose from the grave and walked in total freedom from the power of sin and death.
In all this, Jesus, having never sinned or done anything wrong to deserve such an atrocious death, freely gave His life up in love for you and me.
There is no greater love in all of history than this moment of Jesus dying on the cross for our sins.

“Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.”

John 15:13

Jesus is the resurrection and the life.

Through His blood and His sacrifice, this sin debt was paid for in full so we can walk in freedom from sin.
Praise God!
We have been set free from sin.
But,

“Live as people who are free, not using your freedom as a cover-up for evil, but living as servants of God.”

1 Peter 2:16

Our freedom is not a self-serving freedom, but a self-giving freedom.
Our chains are off not to live our lives for our own fleshly desires, but to serve God and one another through love.
Jesus, being the Son of God and the Savior of the world, taught and demonstrated to His disciples the countercultural life of living to serve no matter what position you are in.

“For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

Mark 10:45

As followers of Jesus, loving God and loving our neighbor is our banner as we run in this race called life.
Love makes a choice to serve, to give, to sacrifice.

Nothing compares to the joy of running freely.
With this freedom, may we look around to those He places on our path to serve and to bless. God will give us strength as we serve through love.

GO:

  1. Who in your life has exemplified a life of serving? What ways can you follow in this person’s example?
  2. What does Jesus’ death and resurrection mean to you?
