“But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. Let those who are mature think this way.”
Philippians 3:13-15
When we train and race, we cannot permit either the successes or the failures of the past to steer our current moment or the future.
Paul didn’t allow his credentials to make him prideful nor did he allow the sins and failures of his past hinder him from moving forward in the race set before him.
Rather, Paul said he dropped the things of the past, strained forward to what was ahead and pressed on toward the goal. We know that a proper running form includes looking forward.
How often in our life are we allowing the things in our past to turn our eyes away from what is ahead?
Jesus said that
No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God.
Luke 9:62
When we fixate on the past, it is like running a race looking backwards but trying to move forward.
It’s not going to work!
By God’s grace, may we focus this week on forgetting what is behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, fixing our eyes on Jesus.
Our God is the God of endurance and encouragement, so look to Him!
Press on!
