New Purpose: Being an Encourager

“And let us consider how to spur one another on to love and good deeds.”

Hebrews 10:24

Some math doesn’t add up.
If you were teaching a child 1+1=2, you might use a simple picture to explain: one horse plus one horse equals two horses.
However, one horse plus one horse doesn’t necessarily equal two horses when it comes to power.
One of the most remarkable facts that I recently learned was this counterintuitive calculation about the Clydesdale horse, a majestic Scottish draft horse originally bred for farm and industrial work.
It is estimated that one Clydesdale can pull up to 8,000 pounds on its own.
You would expect that two Clydesdale horses could together pull 16,000 pounds.
Instead, they have the capability to pull up to 24,000 pounds of weight together since they try to outwork the other horse.
These horses spur each other on to greater strength beyond what seems mathematically, and even physically, possible. One plus one doesn’t always equal two.

As we run in the race of life as a Christian, we have a very important role to play: we are to be representatives and ambassadors for Christ.
Part of this role includes being an encourager, since our God is the God of encouragement.
(Romans 15:5) This new purpose of encouraging others is so critical that we are called to do this daily.
Hebrews 3:13 says,

“But encourage one another every day, as long as it is still called ‘today,’ so that none of you will be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin.”

Hebrews 3:13

When you think about your life, what are some things that you faithfully do daily?
Is encouraging others and encouraging yourself in the Lord something that you daily do?

We know what it feels like to run in a race or train with others who are cheering you on.
Encouraging someone means putting courage into them.
Praise God that He continues to encourage us through the gospel message of Jesus dying on the cross for our sins and rising from the grave and also through His Word, His love, His faithfulness, and His people.
Get ready to see how much more you can do when you come alongside others to encourage and strengthen them.
Remember that following Jesus means that we can be yoked to Him.
Being yoked is a farming term when two animals get paired with a yoke to pull a load together.
Jesus’ yoke is easy and His burden is light. (see Matthew 11:28)
With Jesus’ strength, step out and encourage others through your words and actions and watch the power rise in everyone around you, including yourself.

  1. What rhythms do you have in your life that are healthy daily, weekly, and monthly habits?
Do you have any unhealthy rhythms and habits in your life on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis?
  2. Is encouraging others part of your daily aim?
What is one step you can take today to encourage someone?
  3. Who, what, and where is your source for encouragement?
  4. How can you encourage others in a way that truly puts courage into them?
