Daryl

Christian Physical Educator

As a Christian Physical Educator myself, I am passionate about Jesus and also about children building strong and firm foundations in their early years about healthy living, being active and fit for the long haul. I love to see children move with competence and confidence, enjoying the gift of their fearfully and wonderfully made bodies. I believe that education is about educating life, training, teaching and mentoring young lives to be social-emotionally competent, physically active and morally upright and using physical education as a platform is a privilege and dream to execute it with joy and purpose.

I believe that life on earth is a mere snapshot, an underestimated trailer or on a more serious note, a preparation for eternity with God. Therefore, how I live my life reflects my purpose and exhibits my response to a good and great God. God gave us not just a spirit and soul but a physical body which is highly vulnerable to this world we live in, experiencing degenerations on a regular basis.

Being a multi-sportsperson, running has never been on my list of physical activities to keep myself fit and healthy. That being said, running is something that is convenient, straight-forward and relatively assessable to all remotely, no matter where you are. God caught my attention during one of my casual runs and told me that this is a great opportunity for a conversation with Him, without interruptions, distractions and hurriedness. Thereafter, everything was history. Running and praying or praying while running, became an integral part of my life. Running became an avenue where I could enter into His presence, commune freely with Him, at the same time disciplining my body to stay fit for Jesus.

1 Corinthians 6:20 says “For you were bought at a price. Therefore glorify God with your body”. My dream is for all believers to get a revelation of this truth and come together to build a dynamic running culture whereby believers are empowered and excited to stay both physical and spiritually fit. I pray that through Kingdom Runners, a thriving community of worshippers will emerge, inspiring and spurring the body of Christ in loving God with all of their hearts, soul, mind and strength and love people more, touching the presence of God and the people of this world.

But HE answered me, “MY grace is always more than enough for you, and MY power finds its full expression through your weakness.” So I will celebrate my weaknesses, for when I’m weak I sense more deeply the mighty power of CHRIST living in me. 10 So I’m not defeated by my weakness, but delighted! For when I feel my weakness and endure mistreatment—when I’m surrounded with troubles on every side and face persecution because of my love for CHRIST—I am made yet stronger. For my weakness becomes a portal to GOD’s power.

– 2 Corinthians 12:9 (The Passion Translation) –

Allow me to paraphrase the above verses in my own words to my personal experience with :

But HE answered me, “MY grace is always more than enough for you, and MY power finds its full expression through your running.” So I will celebrate my running, for when I’m weak I sense more deeply the mighty power of CHRIST living in me. So I’m not defeated by my running, but delighted! For when I feel my weakness—because of my love for CHRIST—I am made yet stronger. For my running becomes a portal to GOD’s power.

– 2 Corinthians 12:9 (Wei Chuen Paraphrase) –

Running is my weakness. When I was young, I had never like running. Needless to say, 2.4km run was my weakest and most dreaded station in NAPFA test during my school days.

At age 19, I accepted JESUS CHRIST as my LORD and personal SAVIOUR. There and then I have entered and am enjoying still the FATHER-son relationship with DADDY GOD. Over the course of our relationship, DADDY has interestingly introduced me to chatrun – we will chat while on the run. I will like to borrow the words of late Eric Henry Liddel (a Scottish Olympic Gold Medallist runner) “And when I run, I feel HIS pleasure.” Yes, when I run, not only do I feel HIS pleasure, I feel HIS Presence, I feel HIS Peace, I feel HIS Power, and I hear HIS Voice.

I am a husband of one wife and a father of 4 children, and I am currently serving in the Youth Church as a Youth Mentor. Family time at home is important to me. In order not to affect my family time and yet being able to reach out to the boys in the Youth Church under my care, I mentor the boys over chatrun at wee hours on Saturday morning 5:30a.m. so that I can be home by 7:30a.m. to be with my family. The boys and I would edify one another on what DADDY has revealed to us at the end of each chatrun. Weekday dinner times are precious to me too. In order to have proper dinner time with my family and yet being able to have the “We-time” with DADDY over chatrun, I have brought my running gears to my workplace to run with HIM during my lunchtime. I have learnt to be intentional in revolving my schedule around HIM. I intentionally craft out time to be with DADDY.

I have mentioned that when I run I feel HIS Power. In the year 2017, I had 70 chatruns with DADDY and fasted for 107 days. In the year 2018, I had completed 119 chatruns with DADDY and fasted for 129 days. In the year of 2019, I had completed 208 chatruns with DADDY and fasted for 234 days. Majority of my chatruns coincided on my fasting days where I fasted breakfast and lunch. HOLY SPIRIT sustained me during these chatruns on the fasting days with revelations and understanding of the scriptures. In fact, I ran faster and further on days I was fasting. In the year of 2020, I have set a target to accomplish 240 chatruns and 240 days of fasting with DADDY.

I pray that through Kingdom Runners many will experience, enjoy and engage DADDY in a more personal way, and at the same time enlarge the territory DADDY IS giving us as we sow prayers into the spiritual atmosphere through where the soles of our feet tread on. From my experiences, as we come diligently to seek DADDY’s Face, HE will never come empty handed to meet us. Many times before, DADDY held back the rain so that we were able have our FATHER-son time over the chatrun. HE knows the chatrun is necessary for me and the good portion that I have chosen will never be taken away from me.

Allow me to leave you with another quote from late Eric Henry Liddell,

“It has been a wonderful experience to compete in the Olympic Games and to bring home a gold medal. But since I have been a young lad, I have had my eyes on a different prize. You see, each one of us is in a greater race than any I have run in Paris, and this race ends when GOD gives out the medals.”

Kok Wai could have been…

: A young pilot but he brought a void IC to a Singapore Youth Flying Club interview because his dad insisted on bringing that the voided IC.

: A military pilot, but he did not realise a page 2 on the OCR answer sheet at an air force recruitment test.

: A PE teacher, but somehow he did not apply for it even though he loved sports.

: In an award-winning digital agency, but because he slipped his mind applying for that agency but instead went for another company.

: Working in Beijing or Shanghai in mid-2000, after making a trip there to hunt for an agency job, but somehow he lost that courage to follow through the adventure after returning Singapore.

: Slogging for a friend’s start-up, but a stomach ulcer which gave him 2x 1-week stay in hospital, turned his path to start his commercial photography studio for the next decade.

: Stuck and worried due to fierce competition in the industry but because of a prompting or God-given foresight in 2015, diverted to online marketing, web design and media training.

All these,  moulded and directed Kok Wai to the path today.

A path that God has placed him in. One which he is still exploring.

So here he is,  using that talent to serve purposefully in the non-profit movements like Believe 60 Charity Run, Introvert Network Asia and Kingdom Runner.

Kok Wai is a right-brained WordPress Geek and 80% OCD photographer.

His creative x geeky foundation were built from his education in Multimedia Arts and Graphic Design. He began shooting, with a camera, since Primary 5-6.

That has helped him to be curious about his subjects though he wasn’t initially comfortable with verbalising that curiosity.

He let his photographs do the talking.

Occasionally he clowns around just to get the shot done.

Totally un-introvert.

Now having to help businesses create their online presence, train both teens and adults media skills, lead a Connect Group, and in a core committee managing a growing group of Introverts in Singapore, he is learning to ask the right questions and present that answers into visuals, stories, functional websites and more.

Oh, he’s learning to deal with his seemingly extroverted pair of kids too.
